Find the Word
I got tagged by the lovely @wild-houseplant to find the words 'cackle,' 'grab,' 'ache,' and 'forget' in my WIPs— So here are a bunch of snippets from my Merry Band of Wardens series. Spoiler alert for love interest reveals.
Cackle
Declan couldn’t help it. He burst out laughing, and once he started he couldn’t stop. Relief and adrenaline rushed through him as he doubled over, letting out a series of distinctly un-royal cackles.
Grab
Declan made grabby hands at Assana and her rucksack. “If I’m going to die at the hands of werewolves, at least let me have breakfast first so I can die with a full stomach. It’s how I would have wanted to go.”
“No one's going to die,” Assana said, and then tilted her head and shrugged. “Probably.”
Declan rolled his eyes. “Probably? That’s really reassuring, thanks for that. Now give me the food.”
Ache
Blood roared in Declan’s skull as he tried to make some sense of what Amos was saying. “You love me,” he repeated. Amos nodded. “You love me.” Declan said it again, just to make sure he wasn’t hearing things, that he wasn’t dreaming. “You love me?”
“Stop saying it like it’s a joke!”
Declan blinked at him. “A joke? No, I didn’t mean...” His chest ached. “Amos, I’m saying it because I can’t believe it. Because you could do a lot better than an irredeemable bastard with a limp and a penchant for dramatics, you know? Ask anyone. Ask Assana, or Connor, or Alistair or Sten. Hell, even ask my brother. But you... you’re standing here telling me that you love me.”
“That’s what I said.” Amos held his gaze. “Is that a problem?”
Forget
When she started to sing, Adelene nearly lost her footing. Leliana possessed a voice that would have made Andraste weep with envy.
Leliana closed her eyes, as if she’d drifted off on the soaring notes. This is how she would remember her. If she died tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after that, or somehow sent back to the circle, she’d think back on this moment. Maker, she wanted to kiss her…
Leliana's lashes fluttered open. A pale pink colored her cheeks and she laughed with breathless abandon, the sound as pure and clear as bells ringing.
“What is this dance?” Adelene asked.
“It is called the waltz," Leliana answered, her voice breathy from their exertions.
“Where did you learn such a thing?”
“In the ballrooms of Orlais,” she answered before resuming her jaunty song.
They twirled in dizzying circles around the camp until they were gasping for breath and singing was no longer possible. Maker's breath, in this moment, she was—content. With Leliana in her arms, she could forget the horrors of her life—if even for a moment. When had she last known this happiness?

I did it! I finally finished the Surana and Amell fic for my Merry Band of Wardens series. It's more than twice the length of my previous fics in the series but it's finally done!! So without further ado, I share with you all my completed origin for Adelene Surana and Eden Amell :)
A Tale of Two Mages
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Tags: Blood Magic (Dragon Age), Original Character(s), Circle of Magi, Humor, Bickering, Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Mage Origin (Dragon Age)
Summary: Adelene Surana was not a people person. In fact she would have no problem calling herself a misanthrope. Yet, here she was working with the one person she hated more than the others. Eden Amell. She blamed Jowan. He had wormed his way into her affections and now had her working with his annoyingly chipper best friend to help him escape. What could possibly go wrong?

I saw this post and just had to do the merry band reactions lol
Alistair: "Joining the Wardens is an honor, not a punishment!"
Declan Aeducan, who is deeply regretting his decision to join and realised he could have just made his own way on the surface:
"Are those your words, or someone else's?"
Tumblr media
Amos Brosca, noticing how only the desperate are being recruited:
"I thought so too, at first, but on reflection it's clear we were recruited because we are disposable."
Tumblr media
Connor Cousland, who was coerced into joining the wardens under the threat of leaving his mother to die:
*completely speechless, there are no words*
Tumblr media
Adelene Surana, irritated by the stupidity of such a claim given the experiences of the others and that Aeonar was beginning to look appealing in comparison:
"I mean this with all possible offence, are you stupid?"
Tumblr media
Eden Amell, finding the whole conversation ridiculous as joining the wardens was her literal punishment for breaking circle rules:
"Yes, Sir. A complete and total honour, Sir."
Tumblr media
Viera Tabris, who is an unproven and unskilled fighter yet was just accepted because Duncan needed wardens:
"I think your making a bigger deal about all this than it really is."
Tumblr media
Assana Mahariel, slowly dying from the blight as they speak and who's only hope of survival is the joining:
"Shem, this is the worse punishment imaginable. I may deserve it for abandoning Tamlen, but if I had any choice in the matter I would be home with my Clan."

WIP Whenever / Late Last Line Monday
Thank you to @oxygenforthewicked for the tag 💕💕💕 It's a little late, but whatever am I right :) Here's a little something from the Wallflower and the Wild Child
"It's not what it looks like, Knight Commander," Eden said, stepping forward and placing herself between the group and the furious Templar. Adelene had no idea what came over her at that moment but she reached out and grabbed Eden’s sleeve, ready to pull her back. Her concern for the irritating woman overcoming her desire to shrink into the background. But Eden just shrugged her off. "Well, maybe it is. We were up to some mischief, nothing nefarious though just a harmless prank. We never intended—"
"Enough," the Knight Commander snarled. "You and the elf have only just been made members of the Circle of Magi; and you are already flouting the rules." With one hand gripping his broadsword he stormed over to Eden. "I will not be distracted by your lies," he growled. "You cannot talk your way out of this."
Adelene stood frozen, mouth dry with fear, as the Templar glared down at Eden. "It was worth a try," Eden quipped as she smirked at the fuming Knight Commander, refusing to be the first to break eye contact. Adelene could only watch on, both horrified and a little in awe of her confidence — although, perhaps, stupidity is a more apt description given the circumstances.

Snippet Saturday / Six Sentence Sunday
💕💕💕💕 Thank you @merrybandofmurderers for the tag! It's a little late and basically Sunday now, but it's been a hectic week. So here's a little snippet from my Merry Band of Wardens story for Eden and Adelene. It's in final edits so hopefully soon to be posted (yay!)
"You forced Jowan's hand. What choice did you give him"
The Warden was unperturbed. His mouth curved into a smile, and his brown eyes sparkled. “Is that so?”
“Yes,” Eden said. “And we'd help him again."
“You don't care that he was, in fact, a blood mage?” the Warden asked. “That he abandoned you and your friend?”
Eden raised her chin and answered, "No."
Almost against her will, Adelene's lips twisted into a small smile. She stepped forward and stood shoulder to shoulder with Eden. "Jowan didn't deserve the fate dealt to him," she said. "No mage does." Eden may be ridiculous, but Adelene could never fault her loyalty.
“Fair enough.” The Warden held out his hand. “I’m Duncan, and I would like to invite you both to join the Wardens.”
"You… You can't do that," sputtered the Knight Commander.
"I can, and I just did," the Warden said, his expression resolute.
The Knight Commander wilted under the warden's glare, his expression curdling even more than usual, which was saying something.

WIP Wednesday
Okay so I've been sick as all hell (fuck this flu) so to be honest some of this has been written in a little bit of a delirium and will need more edits but I think it's okay to share. Thank you to @oxygenforthewicked and @merrybandofmurderers for the tag! Here's a little snippet from the Wallflower and the Wild Child. We're getting close to the finish lol recruitment is coming next :)
The First Enchanter, seeing the situation was getting out of control, quickly stepped forward. "That is quite enough, Eden." Turning a stern look on the Knight Commander, he said, "I will handle the mages Gregoire, they are after all under my charge."
Adelene exhaled in relief. Now was her moment to explain. She could tell Irving everything, well almost everything, come clean and explain Jowan's situation. Their situation. They had to help Jowan, not because they didn't respect the rules of the Circle—well, truthfully only she respected the rules—but because they all knew Tranquility to be a fate worse than death. Irving was a mage. He would understand. He must. Yet, the words remained stuck in her throat. Fear constricted them. It felt like a chain around her neck, tightening the more she tried to speak.
The First Enchanter looked from Eden to Adelene and sighed. "I'm so disappointed in you girls. You could have told me what you knew of this plan, and you didn't.”
“You wouldn't have cared," Jowan accused. "You just bow to the Chantry's every whim."
"Jowan's right," Eden agreed. "You don't care about any of us." She looked so furious as to be hot to the touch. Adelene frowned. Why was she so angry? It didn't make sense. Adelene understood Jowan's anger, he never understood that Irving worked with templars to protect them. But Eden… Eden had always respected Irving. However, right now, her eyes were filled with such hatred and with her hands clenched so very tightly at her side, she looked ready to explode. Adelene couldn't understand what had changed.
"If you had only trusted me, I could have protected you," Irving tried to explain.
"Why would we ever trust you?" Eden sneered. "You're the one who signed off on the order."
"What?" Shock staggered Adelene. The things Eden said... they weren’t true. They couldn't possibly be true. "Irving would never do that. Why are you lying?"
Irving looked at Adelene, his gaze heavy with guilt. Which was absurd; he wouldn't sign off such an order. Would he?
"It's true, my dear."
Adelene couldn’t unhear the words. They lashed like a whip across her thoughts, again and again, tearing her apart. The worst of it was her mentor's pathetic attempts to justify his decision.
"I could not allow a blood mage to undergo the Harrowing. It would have endangered all under my care."
Her shock suddenly flipped to blinding rage. "There is no excuse for your actions," Adelene cried. "You are our advocate, our protector, and you sold us out. You're just as bad as the templars."
"Enough," the Knight Commander roared. His thunderous voice reverberated off the walls and brought about an abrupt silence. But what purpose did words serve them now? It had all been a trap they had no hope of escaping. "As Knight Commander of the Templars I sentence this blood mage to death. And this initiate has scorned the Chantry and her vows. Take her to Aeonar.”
"The... the mages’ prison." Lily stammered and tried to back away from the approaching templars. "No... please, no," she pleaded. "Not there!”
"No! I won't let you touch her," Jowan cried, the desperation and fear in his voice clear to all in the room. Adelene's face drained of colour when she realised what he was about to do.
"Don't," she cried out. The word was ragged and raw, tearing out of her chest with more emotion than she’d ever felt in her life. But it was too late. Blood already poured from his palm.
Adelene was the first to wake. The rest of them were scattered around the ground, dead or unconscious. She suppressed a shudder as the memory of the nightmarish sights of blood and gore, the smell of scorched flesh, the cries of men reared to the forefront of her mind. Jowan, how could you…
“Wh– what happened?” Eden mumbled.
Relief washed through Adelene—Eden was alive. Hopefully her confusion over what just happened will keep her as such. Adelane doubted the same could be said for her.
“Is everyone all right?" Irving asked. "Where is Gregoir?”
“I knew it… blood magic," the Knight Commander growled, as he climbed up from the floor. "But to overcome so many… I never thought him capable of such power…”
”But… Jowan said he wasn’t a blood mage,” Eden whispered, tears glistening in her eyes. She looked so lost and confused. Guilt twisted in Adelene's stomach. Jowan was a blood mage, and Adelene had taken great strides to help him hide it from others. Even Eden.
"None of us expected this," Irving said gently, then turned to face the Knight Commander. "Are you all right, Gregoir?
“As good as can be expected given the circumstances!" The Knight Commander snapped. "If you had let me act sooner, this would not have happened! Now we have a blood mage on the loose and no way to track him down!” He thrust his hands into his hair and began to pace. "Where is the girl?"
Lily stepped forward. "Here."
The Knight Commander signalled the only remaining templar. "Get her out of my sight!" Then he turned his ire on Adelene and Eden. "And you two," he snarled. "You helped a blood mage escape!" Disgust laced his every word. "Look at all he's harmed!"
Adelene's face crumpled for a single second, just long enough for her to indulge the feelings of fear. Her lips twisted, her eyes squeezed shut, and her heart skipped a beat. But then she pulled herself together. She would go to her death with bravery and nothing else. Stepping forward she said, "you forced Jowan's hand. What choice did you give him?"
*edit* removed tags cos brain finally clicked on and I realised that y'all either tagged me or already shared lol

Six Sentence Sunday
💕💕💕 Thank you @merrybandofmurderers for the tag! I'm back at my bullshit so more stuff to share. This is more than six sentences but whatever, plus this fic has gotten out of control (it was planned at about 2k words but is over 3k now and I'm not finished lol). Here's a snippet from The wallflower and the wild child from my Merry Band of Wardens series.
A hush fell upon the group. Jowan's phylactery was destroyed. There was nothing left tying him to the Circle. He was, in essence, free. But, of course, Eden just had to ruin the moment.
“So that's all, huh?” Eden said, as she looked down at the small pool of blood on the floor, her face scrunched up into a look of confused disappointment. “It’s kind of anticlimactic, don't you think?"
"What else did you expect?" Adelene snapped.
"I don't know." Eden shrugged. "More, I guess. It's just meant to be this big thing, but it's just blood. It’s just all a bit disappointing, I remember it being so much more dramatic when they made the damn thing ."
Adelene's irises disappeared behind thin slits of barely suppressed rage. "Oh, yes, the destruction of one's leash appears hardly worth all the effort now. There was clearly not enough pageantry."

WIP Wednesday
💕💕💕 thank you @noire-pandora for the tag! It's not much, this week has honestly been killing me but it's only four days until I can move into my new place (yay!) and then I'm on two weeks holiday and I can focus on getting this all wrapped up. Here is another little snippet from my Merry Band Of Wardens fic.
As they traversed the labyrinth-like hallways they encountered several more magical guardians. Jowan did his best to assist, this time anyway, which Adelene appreciated. When the group reached what appeared to be the last room—which turned out to be the forbidden items repository—Adelene feared they had reached the end of their journey. There appeared to be no way forward. They'd failed.
"Eden! Maker's breath. Will you stop touching things?"
Eden smirked and lifted her hands in the air, palms splayed. "I'm not touching anything. I'm only looking. I promise."
Adelene sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. She took a deep breath and let it out. Once, twice, three times, forcing calm. Yes, things looked grim—there didn't appear to be a way forward and Jowan's escape plan was dead in the water. But, they haven't been caught by the Templars, yet anyway, so there was still a chance they could survive this with their minds intact. She would just have to go before Irving and plead for Jowan. It would work out. It had to.
"Hey! I found something!” Eden exclaimed, pointing wildly at some stone statue, and Adelene was overcome with an overwhelming desire to shove Eden face first into the bloody thing.
"I thought I told you not to touch anything," Adelene snapped.
"I didn't," Eden said. "But this could help us, Addie. It amplifies magic. We could use it to break through that wall."
"What are you talking about?"
Eden pointed to a bookcase in front of the statue. "See there? Behind the bookcase? The mortar holding the stones together is decaying and it wouldn't take much to get the wall to crumble."
